Concerning Muffins

Down at the local muffin shop this morning, I made sure to check out my unit cost vs. what the Justice Department appears to have paid. It's $1.60 per muffin here, or $14.60 a dozen.

The reason I can't generate anti-government outrage is that the Justice Department, whilst stupid enough to pay these prices, didn't set them. The private sector did, specifically the Capitol Hilton. The Republicans ought to be applauding the initiative of the free enterprise system in maximising its profit at the expense of a gullible customer. That's capitalism in its rawest form.

I shared the story with the local proprietor, a hard-working guy who hadn't heard it. I admit there was a gleam in his eye.

A manufacturer said during the Civil War, "you can sell anything to the government, for any price you've got the guts to ask." We might add that you'll get away with it, because the media and the public will blame the buyer, not you.

Must be some damn good muffins for $16. Geesh. Do they bake themselves? I would have a hard time spending that much on an entire MEAL...let alone 1 little muffin.

Never been to the Capitol Hilton, but I have had hotel muffins in DC...not worth 16 cents, let alone $16.

Haaar, then again muffins themselves have changed. Remember the ones we used to get at home or out, the apricot sized, not too sweet pleasures somewhere between yeast bread and dessert? Now they are big, honking boluses of fat and sugar.

Plus, I'm betting the ones in question are priced by service of delivery on sked. The fat bread is coincidental. Then is $16 per consumer worth the convenience?

Not to me either...

That's what I like at the local. The muffins are big but the traditional texture is still there. DC never saw the like.

Hmm, now I see that the hotel and others involved are putting out WTF releases. While it's still pricey, this seems in line with catered events. The $16 per guest was for a package that included the function room rental, a full continental breakfast with pastries, fruit juices, coffee service and such.

So, you get that thrown in at say a $100 a night Holiday Inn Express, but a catered hotel breakfast is never cheap.

I guess the $16 muffin is a better story and the one Scott Brown continues to broadcast. Muffins.
